{Five areas of planning}

As you learned in the video, a truly comprehensive Special Needs Plan involves planning in FIVE areas:

  1. VISION – A Vision Plan describes what a great life for your child looks like. This includes your hopes and dreams for their life as well as their own hopes and dreams for the future. Your Vision Plan guides every other step of your planning journey.
  2. LIFE – A Life Plan documents important details about your family and your child, describes your child’s daily routines, serves as a benchmarking tool to show annual progress, and functions as a transition guide in the future.
  3. RESOURCE – A Resource Plan determines the services, organizations, and individuals who can assist with fulfilling the hopes and dreams of your loved one’s Vision Plan and meet the current needs assessed by their Life Plan.
  4. FINANCIAL – A Financial Plan provides strategies to pay for the services your Resource Plan determined are necessary to achieve the goals of your loved ones Vision and Life Plans. It also addresses the challenge of how to provide financially for your child when you are no longer able to do so.
  5. LEGAL – A Legal Plan controls, protects, and transfers your assets according to your wishes (during your lifetime and after your death) so that your child has access to the resources necessary to live a great life. It also ensures that the Comprehensive Special Needs Plan that you have created continues to be fulfilled, even when you are no longer able to make decisions.

Now that you understand what a comprehensive Special Needs Plan includes, let’s start get started with the first area of planning: The Vision Plan.

{Vision Plan overview, Vision Plan questions}

As you heard in the video, a Vision Plan is an essential element of your Special Needs Plan. It describes your child’s great life, including your hopes and dreams and his or her hopes and dreams for the future.

Your Vision Plan will guide the remainder of your entire Special Needs Planning process.

To get started, please think about the following questions and discuss them with any other individuals who will be involved in your planning process:

  • What are your hopes and dreams for your child’s abundant life?
  • What abilities do you see in him or her that you want to encourage and nurture?
  • What does a great life for your child look like now, in 10-15 years, and in 25+ years?

Now that you’re thinking about your child’s GREAT life — including their hopes, dreams, and abilities — it’s time to start planning!

To help make your planning process as easy, efficient, and affordable as possible, our team at ENABLE created a secure, interactive, online planning portal where you can access planning resources and tools, complete your entire planning process from the ease and comfort of your own home, and return year after year to edit your Special Needs Plan as your child grows and develops.

{How to answer Vision Plan questions}

Vision Plan questions:

1. Tell us a story about a time when your child exceeded your expectations or surprised you by their abilities. What did they do? How did they do it? How did that make you feel? How did that make him or her feel?

2. What has been your child’s greatest accomplishment to date? Why do you feel that this is his or her greatest accomplishment? What made it such a great accomplishment? Did your son or daughter see this as a great accomplishment, too?

3. What activities does your child enjoy?

4. What abilities do you see in your child that you want to continue nurturing?

5. Tell us a story about a time your child made a difference in someone else’s life. What did they do? What happened as a result? How did that make you feel? How did that make your son or daughter feel?

 6. What does a GREAT life look like for your child, in terms of their level of independence, social life, spiritual life, education, job or vocation, home environment, etc. Over the next five years, in 10-15 years, in 25 years and beyond…

Great job! You’ve completed the VISION PLAN QUESTIONNAIRE.

Next to Section 1 you should now see the following options:

Clicking the button above will take you to a screen where you can browse photos stored on your device and select one to upload for insertion into your Vision Plan.

After you’ve uploaded your photo, go back to the Vision Plan landing page.

Next to Section 2 you should now see the following options:

If you’d like to change the photo you’ve uploaded, click the blue “Edit My Answers” button. When you are satisfied with your photo, click the blue “Submit My Answers” button. The section will then be marked complete.

Once Section 1 and Section 2 of your Vision Plan are both marked complete, the blue “Create My Vision Plan” button at the bottom of your screen will unlock.

{Congrats and NEXT STEPS}

Congratulations! You’ve now completed your Vision Plan and this online course.

What did you learn about your child – and yourself – as you answered each question? What hopes, dreams, and abilities are you most excited to continue planning for?

Creating a Vision Plan is a big accomplishment and you should be proud of your progress.

But don’t stop here!

As your child grows, develops, and changes, your Vision Plan should also adjust. Be sure to come back at least once a year to update your Vision Plan.

Also, don’t forget that truly comprehensive Special Needs Plan includes Life, Resource, Financial, and Legal planning. Head back to your PLANNING DASHBOARD to learn more about these other important areas of the planning process.
